Hello everyone and welcome to my website!  My name is Karen Sanders and I am an AmSAT certified Alexander Technique teacher.

Instrumental and vocal musicians are prone to debilitating pain from maintaining the same body position for long periods of time when practicing or performing.  I know this firsthand after years of experiencing discomfort as I played my flute in performances and practices.

Learning to be aware of your body – how it feels in various positions, the level of tension in the neck, aches and pains after performing  – is the beginning to finding the solution.  The Alexander Technique is a mind-body training program to help you in this process

My Story

My journey to finding the Alexander Technique started my last semester of my undergraduate degree in music.  I had sustained a repetitive stress injury (RSI) in both arms after hours of rehearsals, practice sessions and performances, and was searching for answers.  At a friend’s suggestion, I took a chance and started my first Alexander Technique lessons in Chicago.  Although I did not fully understand everything at the time, it was enough to know that this technique made practical sense and provided new ways of using myself to help prevent my bad habits and further injury.

After graduation I continued my private lessons and eventually decided to go to school for Alexander Technique.  At first, I was attending solely for my benefit, but after a few months I realized the importance of the technique and committed to the full three year teacher training.  I wanted to be able to offer the Alexander technique to others to help prevent injuries while also helping those who are injured recover faster.
